Do you currently have a regular self-reflective or mindfulness practice?
If so where in the house do you normally do this?
One of the most beneficial and therapeutic practices you can incorporate into your daily or weekly routine is that of creating a 10-minute practice of mindfulness or reflective thinking.
The magic of this practice doesn’t tend to happen during the 10-minutes itself, the benefits show themselves at other times such as a great idea coming to you while driving or thoughts about a new direction that pop up when you’re in the shower.
We often think that to be effective, mindfulness or working on yourself needs to take at least 20 minutes plus and it’s certainly true that the benefits are dose-dependent and the more the better.
HOWEVER it is still transformational to have any time at all. This means 5-10 minutes done regularly can help enormously – the key here being that its done regularly.
The secret is to create this as a new habit and practice making it happen for 3 or 4 weeks until you can feel really feel the benefits, at which point it becomes easy to continue the practice.
Creating a new habit can be hard work – especially if you are trying to snatch your 10-minutes in varying places in the house depending on who’s in and what time of day it is.
It’s also easy to be distracted by what is around you – I’m not the best meditator and can easily be distracted by a pile of washing I spy that needs sorting, even though I know that time would better be spent on my meditation cushion!
